Very interesting and supports other stuff about Col. Everard Meade Feild (my namesake) and Sgt. George S. Bernard are my parental great grand fathers. My great aunt who lived in Petersburg was GSB's daughter and my paternal grandmother's sister. She used to take me out to the Battle of the Crater area (circa 1950's) and walked me through it many times and all the time "cussin' the dam'n Yankees". I found many minnie balls and still have them. I probably would be arrested if I hunted them today on the battlefield. Thanks for the info. You may contact me if you wish

I forgot to mention one important fact in my previous E-Mail. This is the fact that John Edward, Ashton A., and William Andrew Jackson are all buried in their father, Tyre B. Jackson's plot in the Blandford Church Cemetery.

My G-Great Grandfather; John Edward Jackson (b. 1833) and his brother William Andrew Jackson (b.1834) served with C Co. 12th Va. Inf. Regt. John enlisted 6 Sept. 1861 and William enlisted 10 Aug. 1862. William was captured on 14 Sept. 1862 at the Battle of Crampton's Gap, Md. He was exchanged at Aiken's Landing on 2 Oct. 1862, and again captured at the Battle of High Bridge on 5 Apr. 1865.

John was captured at the Battle of Burgess Mill on 27 Oct. 1864 and exchanged on 28 Mar. 1865. He was again captured at Bermuda Hundred about 2 Apr. 1865.

There were also 3 other brothers; Cpl. Ashton A. Jackson (b.1838), George T. Jackson (b. 1842), and Lt. Thomas Branch Jackson (b. 1843). All three of these brothers were with C Co. 3rd Va. Inf. Regt. Cpl. Ashton Jackson was killed 27 June 1862 at the Battle of Gaines' Mill. Lt. Thomas Jackson and his brother George were both wounded and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg; during Pickett's Charge on 3 July 1863.

If you require any further information on this subject; or if you are willing to provide me with further information, feel free to E-Mail me at any time.

Sincerely yours:

CORRECTION: the author of a book titled 12th Virginia Infantry (2nd edition) is not W.E. Henderson, it's William D. Henderson.

Thanks for your detailed and interesting post. This has special significance for me, as David Weisiger was (if my math serves me correctly) my great-great-great granduncle. My father and I have visited his grave at Petersburg and seen the plaque on the wall of the church that reads "Sufficient for his epitaph--he led the Crater Charge." It is always fascinating for me to find out more about him, so your article was a wonderful find.
