Surgeon Alexander Nelson Dougherty of New Jersey was acting 2nd Army Corps Medical Director in Maryland and was in charge of the Corps field hospital on the Susan Hoffman farm just north of Sharpsburg during and after the battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862.
