Private James Clayton Reed of the Bedford (Va) Artillery left Randolph-Macon College to enlist in 1861 and had his left hand “torn off” by a shell at Sharpsburg in September 1862. He was in hospitals into April 1863 and served out the war on detail to the CS Quartermaster Department in Petersburg, VA.

He went back to school, at the University of Virginia, was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1868, and served in various “circuits” in Virginia and North Carolina. He was Chaplain General of the United Confederate Veterans at his death at age 92 in 1935.

He was older brother to famous US Army doctor Walter Reed (1851-1902).

His photograph is from Lafferty’s Sketches and Portraits of the Virginia Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South (1890)
