From old New England stock, and born in New Haven, CT, Frederick Hunt Dagget moved to Pontotoc, Mississippi from Mobile, AL with his family at age 5 in 1849. He was a 17 year old student in May 1861 when he enlisted as Private, Company G, 2nd Mississippi Infantry. He was cited in Orders for his bravery at Sharpsburg in September 1862 and was captured at Gettysburg in 1863. He spent the rest of the war a prisoner at Fort Delaware.

The impressive gentleman above is Frederick’s great-grandfather Naphtali Daggett (1727-1780), Yale College Class of 1748 and Yale President from 1766-77, and a Revolutionary in 1779. His portrait is in the Yale University Art Gallery.
