Citadel graduate Captain Thomas Chisholm Beckham of Company B, 5th South Carolina Infantry commanded his regiment on the Maryland Campaign because he was the senior officer present for duty. He was their Major when they were surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

Seen here is the a Palmetto Flag – Big Red – closely associated with the Military College of South Carolina (The Citadel). It probably flew over Citadel Cadets on Morris Island, SC at the start of the war and is now on display in the John Monroe J. Holliday Alumni Center.
