Private Major Hezekiah “Mage” Allen was in action with his Company on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. This photograph, from the Alabama Archives, was probably taken soon after he enlisted in July 1861. Two years later, at Gettysburg, he was shot in the head and captured:

shot in burr of ear and hearing totally destroyed and paralyzed right side of face and partially destroyed use of right eye. Can’t shut right eye. Practically lost right eye from mini ball in right ear.

He was exchanged in November 1863 with no further military record, but he lived to 1902.
