Captain Ralph Wheelock Pomeroy Allen of Company C, and Captain Lynford David Criss Tyler and First Sergeant William B Rose, Company H, helped rally the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry after they were flanked in action in the West Woods at Antietam in September 1862.

Sergeant Rose’s (later, as 2nd Lieutenant) and Captain Tyler’s photographs, below, are from Ward’s History of the One-Hundred and Sixth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 (2d ed., 1906)
