This notice in the Greenwood (SC) Index-Journal of 12 October 1927 describes the death of 83 year old William Thomas Hartness, late of the 17th South Carolina Infantry.

He had enlisted at age 18 in April 1862, was wounded at Turner’s Gap on South Mountain in September 1862 and again at Fort Stedman near Petersburg, VA in March 1865, but he survived to return to farming in York County, SC.
