Appended to Colonel Cake’s official report as printed on page 2 of the Pottsville (PA) Miner’s Journal of Saturday, 4 October 1862, is his list of the men of his 96th Pennsylvania Infantry who were killed or wounded in the fight at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862. It’s not found in the Official Records in company with the Colonel’s report.

Notes

* Frank Hanley died in camp at Bakersville, MD on 29 October 1862.

† Michael Connery is listed by Bates’ History and in the Civil War Veteran’s Card File as having been killed at Gaines’ Mill, VA on 27 June 1862. He enlisted in Pottsville on 13 September 1861 at age 26; no further information found in census or genealogical records. If this military record is correct, he couldn’t have been at Crampton’s Gap.

‡ Charles Wessner died at Sharpsburg, probably in the Antietam/Smoketown hospital, on 5 March 1863.

¶ Barnett McMulligan not found in any roll or roster for the regiment. Possibly confused with Barney McMichael, who was KIA. Or possibly Bernard McMonigal/McGonigal: Irish born miner, enlisted in Pottsville in October 1861 at age 45, reenlisted, transferred to the 95th Pennsylvania, and mustered out in July 1865.

Thanks to the Pennsylvania Newspaper Archive for posting the Miner’s Journal online, and to regimental historian David A Ward for the pointer to it, in his The 96th Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Civil War (2018).
