Wounded Georgians left at the Battle of Sharpsburg

Following is a casualty list from Surgeon William H Philpot (above) of the 4th Georgia Infantry, which he provided to the Savannah Republican in November 1862 on his return to Georgia after his capture at the battle at Sharpsburg.

Philpot had stayed in Maryland to treat wounded soldiers after the battle and at least into October 1862, and apparently kept good notes.

Listed are names of those wounded and other men from Georgian regiments who were left behind at Sharpsburg, MD when the Confederate army returned to Virginia on the night of 18-19 September 1862.

I’m posting the list here for my own ready reference: I’ll go through each of the names over then next weeks and update their pages on Antietam on the Web or add new pages for any I don’t already have.

Notes

This list is from a copy carried by the Atlanta (GA) Southern Confederacy of 18 November 1862, page 2, posted online by Georgia Historic Newspapers/Digital Library of Georgia.

Thanks to Laura Elliot for sharing the Philpot List with me. She also posted it to the CivilWarTalk board, where there has been considerable excellent discussion about those names and Dr Philpot’s role at Sharpsburg.

Philpot’s photograph above is from Henry Walter Thomas’s History of the Doles-Cook Brigade (1903, pg. 92); it’s online from the Internet Archive and others.
