Colonel William MccComb had risen from a Private since enlisting in the 14th Tennessee Infantry in June 1861 and he led them in action at Sharpsburg in September 1862. He was wounded at Sharpsburg and again at Chancellorsville in May 1863, but survived to be appointed Brigadier General in January 1865.
