Pvt Thomas H Phifer

Private Thomas H. Phifer of Company D, 2nd Louisiana Infantry wrote home from Harpers Ferry on 16 September 1862:

We penetrated into Maryland until within twenty miles of the Pennsylvania line – we then turned abruptly to the left and after some hard marching by a circuitous rout finally came up in the rear of Harpers Ferrey. We have been shelling this place of such renouned strength for two days. This morning bout nine o’clock They ran up a white flag about as large as a sheet…

There is a great battle going on beyond the Potomic now, but I have not heard any of the particulars. Before you receive this you will hear of one of the greatest victories over the Yankees ever yet gained. Next you will hear of peace be declared sooner…

Sadly, young Thomas didn’t live to see that peace. He was killed in action the next day at Sharpsburg.

His photograph was kindly contributed to his Findagrave memorial by Mike Richardson.
