Sergeant William Jefferson Mobley was an 18 year old student at Mount Lebanon University in Bienville Parish when he enlisted in the 9th Louisiana Infantry in March 1862. He was wounded at Sharpsburg in September and furloughed home into February 1863, but returned to serve with the regiment to Appomattox Court House in April 1865.

He graduated from medical school at the University of Louisiana (now Tulane) in the Class of 1869 and was a practicing physician to the end of his life in 1897. That’s his medical ala mater above, in an engraving from the cover [pdf] of Dr. A.E. Fossier’s History of Medical Education in New Orleans (c. 1935), online from Tulane University.
