Richard Deignan went out with the Lochrane Guards (later Company F of Phillips’ Georgia Legion) – “eighty strong: all sons of the Emerald Isle” – as 2nd Corporal in August 1861. This clipping is from the Macon Daily Telegraph of 30 August 1861.
Corporal Deignan was captured at Fox’s Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862 but was exchanged and returned to duty almost immediately, on 2 October. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in December 1862 but was a prisoner of war from his capture at Knoxville on 29 November 1863 to June 1865.
