This excellent photograph of Captain James M. Johnson of the Phillips Legion Infantry Battalion is online accompanying a bio sketch by Kurt Graham, thanks to its owner Al Camblin.

Captain Johnson was seriously wounded at Fox’s Gap in September 1862, again at Frederickburg, VA in December, and finally, mortally, at Knoxville, TN on 29 November 1863; he died later the same day.

His brother American Ford Johnson (1840-1905, below) may have been in Maryland in 1862 as a Private in the 10th Alabama Infantry, and was 2nd Lieutenant of his brother’s Company L of the Legion when he too was wounded at Knoxville. His picture also from Mr. Graham, courtesy of Mr. Camblin.
