Not in Antietam National Cemetery

There are several stones in the Antietam National Cemetery (ANC) for men who were actually buried elsewhere.

Readers occasionally ask about this, and I can never find them when I want them, hence this list.  It may evolve as I learn more.

While I’m at it – here are some other interesting things about burials in the ANC that I’ve seen:

  • Although intended otherwise, there is, in fact, at least one known Confederate soldier buried here. He’s Lieutenant William Ellison of the 18th Mississippi Infantry. More about that burial here.
  • There may be a very large dog resting in the cemetery with his owner, Captain Werner von Bachelle of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry.
  • There is at least one replacement stone in the cemetery – apparently installed to correct an error in his home state – for Corporal W.W. Farmer of the 8th Ohio (vice Connecticut).
  • The burial place of David Spencer Milburn of Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry is found under stone #159 marked “Dan’l Mibbon, N.Y” – cemetery records have him in Company G of the 13th New York. Perhaps he’ll get a new marker too?
