Private David Burr Vance was among the small group of soldiers who discovered Confederate General Lee’s Special Orders No. 191 in a field near Frederick, MD on 13 September 1862 and he was wounded by gunshot to the right hand and left knee 4 days later at Antietam. He was discharged for wounds in December, but was commissioned First Lieutenant in the new 117th Indiana Infantry in August 1863 and was Captain at muster-out in February 1864. He married his childhood sweetheart Sarah E. Brown in November 1864.

He and Sarah were on the front page of the Brownston (IN) Banner in November 1914 on the occasion of their 50th anniversary.
