Irish-born Charles M. Grainger had served in the Crimean War as a teenager and was noted for his actions while Sergeant, Company B, 88th New York Infantry at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
His remarkable life is reviewed here in his obituary from the Brooklyn Eagle of 8 June 1915.
